Next Meeting is 1st Crime Watch at Sons of Hermann Hall

3414 Elm Street (at Exposition)

Tuesday June 17 at 9 p.m.
First and foremost, I'd like to remind all about the way the Deep Ellum Enrichment Project (DEEP) operates. DEEP invites everyone to join us at our meetings, some have an agenda, some just have a memory of the hood... Regardless, you're all welcome. Come out and meet some new friends and catch up with old ones, let us know about an upcoming event or just hang out and maybe offer a hand or suggestion. This Tuesday's starts a new tradition for DEEP, a monthly crime watch. Sgt. D. Conley and Sgt. J.Nash have graciously offered to help us get this aspect of DEEP off the ground. Also scheduled to attend is Senator Royce West. Senator West was installed as State Senator, District 23 (Dallas County), in January 1993. Texas Monthly Magazine recently named Senator West as one of the 25 most powerful people in Texas politics. Senator West has an office in Deep Ellum and we are honored to have him as our guest. This meeting will start at 9 p.m. You are encouraged to arrive early and mix and mingle (doors open at 8 p.m.) but both Sergeants and the Senator are busy people and we do not want to hold them up more than we have to. And just to show my love to those of you who arrive early, I'll again have some tickets to the Dallas Museum of Art for the first 10 people who show up. Just ask when me when you arrive and if I have any left they're yours. (I'll have on black and white striped shirt so you can spot me)
Taken from the Dallas Police Dept. web site:The Crime Watch program is a community based program that's been proven to deter crime. Crime Watch is a group of neighbors working together along with law enforcement agencies and local organizations in a community-wide effort to reduce residential crime. Getting to know your neighbors and becoming familiar with your neighbors' habits and vehicles allows you to know when something is suspicious or out of the ordinary. Crime Watch does not mean being a vigilante. Participants do not confront suspects or take any personal risks at all! Getting Started
  • Form a small planning committee.
  • Contact the Crime Prevention Specialist at the police substation in your area and ask that he/she come to the meeting to discuss your community's problems or needs.
  • Select a Crime Watch coordinator and block captains who are responsible for organizing meetings and relaying information to members. Your Crime Prevention Specialist can help train members in home security and reporting skills and also provide information on local crime patterns.
  • Recruit new members, keep up-to-date on new residents, and make special efforts to involve the elderly, working parents, and young people.
How Can I Prevent Crime?
  • Improve outdoor lighting.
  • Keep your home's doors, garage and windows closed and locked at all times.
  • Don't leave lawn equipment or toys outside or in an open garage.
  • Remember that as many crimes occur during daylight hours as at night. Don't let your guard down during the day.
